A carved ruby red vase

Qianlong mark and period, 1736–1795
China

height: 16.7 cm

The bulbous body is supported on a short circular splayed foot and the waisted neck, carved with acanthus leaves, flares open to a wide mouth; a band of lingzhi heads (symbols of good fortune) and a leaf pattern decorates the outer rim. The main body is carved with a battle scene from ‘The Story of The Three Kingdoms’ (Wei, Shu, and Wu) in a complex open design. The warriors combat on horseback, and archers are strategically positioned on rocky hills amidst pine trees, banners and clouds. The wheelcut four-character Qianlong mark is applied within a square to the centre of the base.
