A
LARGE SANDSTONE SCULPTURE OF VARAHA
9th century
AD
Central India
The reincarnation of Vishnu with a boars head, Varaha
stands in alidha asana; he leans with the right
leg straight and the left leg raised and bent at
the knee supported by two naga figures. The figure
has four arms; two on the right side are held down
- one on the thigh, the other on a short column.
The two left hand arms are held up and bent at the
elbow - the upper most one supporting a celestial
nymph whom he faces with raised snout, the other
hand supported on the raised knee and holding a
disk. Varaha wears a dhoti and elaborate beaded
jewellery, and a large floral garland swoops over
his shoulders and down to his knees. A large lotus
leaf is suspended over his head, acting like a parasol.
Height: 44" / 112 cm
Width: 22.5" / 57 cm
