STUCCO GUARDIAN FIGURE

Chinese
Shanxi Province
12th century AD

TWO GUARDIAN FIGURES flank the bodhisattvas; they are fully dressed in armour - each with different grotesque masks adorning the shoulders and stomach area. They are not mirror images of each other - their arms being in different positions, and their faces with opposing expressions.

The guardian with an aggressive face is standing in a combative pose, whilst the guardian with his hands held together in devotion, has an expression of introspection.

Height: 128 cm
