THE BODHISATTVAS

Chinese
Shanxi Province
12th century AD

The Bodhisattvas flank the buddha, making a pair; both are seated upon painted lotus bases - the left hand figure with right leg up and left leg down, in 'royal ease', and the right hand figure in the reverse position. The right hand of one bodhisattva is in 'vitarka' - the mudra of intellectual argument; the other bodhisattva is almost a mirror image, except that the right hand holds a scroll.
