A
CHINESE EXPORT PADOUK GAMES TABLE (AFTER AN ENGLISH SOFA TABLE)
China
Circa 1800
The rounded, rectangular twin flap top, with a reeded edge, has a central reversible sliding panel - one side being in the form of a chess board with inlaid ebony and bone squares. This panel opens to reveal a similarly inlaid backgammon board - above a drawer with ivory handles. The table has trestle end supports, with splayed legs, brass caps and castors.
Measures: 73 cm x 122 cm x 59 cm / 28 ¾" x 48" (extended)
x 23 ¼"
Compare: 'The Decorative Arts of The China Trade' 1991, Carl L. Crossman - colour plate 89 illustrates a very similar table in the Richard Milhender Collection.
