A BLACK LACQUER TABLE WITH INCISED GILT DECORATION (QIANGJIN)
17/18th century
Kangxi period
China
A low side table with rectangular top above a wide scalloped apron and four bold cabriole legs; they rest upon a rectangular base, supported by four step feet. The designs on the upper surfaces of the top and base depict landscapes, while the apron and legs are decorated, in typical Kangxi style, with scrolling vines and leaves.
The qiangjin technique involves incising the decoration onto red or black lacquer; gold foil or powder is then pressed into the grooves.
