A PAIR OF TERRACOTTA TWO COLOUR GLAZED, TANG DYNASTY ‘FAT LADIES’
China
8th century AD
The pair of fashionable court ladies are modelled standing on low bases - with arms raised to chest height and wearing long loose robes glazed in dark blue and ochre. The garments entirely cover each body including the hands but leave the curling toed shoes exposed. The heads with elaborate helmet shaped hair styles have been left unglazed and are decorated with the remnants of the original cold pigments.
