A BRONZE FIGURE OF SYAMATARA
Tibet/Pala Indian
12th century
The figure is seated in lalitasana on a high Pala double lotus tiered base, with beaded borders to top and bottom. She is dressed in a dhoti that covers the legs leaving the torso bare, apart from the jewelled and beaded necklace, armbands, and bracelets of an Indian princess. Syamatara is flanked on either side by a lotus that rises above each shoulder, and the hair is elaborately styled in the aristocratic fashion of the time.
Height: 13cm
Similar example is illustrated in “On The Path to Enlightenment”, The Berti Ashmann Collection at the Museum Rietburg, Zurich - figure 80.
