A
LARGE PARCEL GILT FIGURE OF
AVALOKITESVARA
China
Ming dynasty
Early 15th century
Avalokitesvara is seated in half lotus, with pendent
legs crossed at the ankles and both hands with palms
downturned above the knees. All areas of the exposed
flesh have been richly gilt and contrast with the
blackened bronze of the rest of the figure. The
hair is swept up into a triple loop behind a lotus
decorated double tiara accommodating a gilded image
of Amitabha.
The facial features are very finely modelled with
down cast eyes in contemplation. Pendulous ears
are adorned by floral pendent earrings, and complex
jewellery chains radiate across the bare chest from
a central plaque; these are echoed in the jewellery
that adorns the lower legs. The bodhisattva is dressed
in voluminous garments edged with a broad band chased
with flower scrolls against a stamped background.
Height: 38" / 91.5 cm
