| 44 | A JADE
VASE CAVED WITH BAMBOO AND PHOENIX |
18th century
China
The vase is carved as two adjoining
sections of bamboo - with sprouting
stems to front and back bearing leaves.
A phoenix stands on one leg in front
of the smaller bamboo section. Its head
is turned back looking over its body,
and its elaborate tail feathers cascade
to the ground. The double vase is carved
from a pale celadon stone with russet
patches.
