| 9 | A GILT
BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESVARA GUANYIN |
14th century AD
China
Avalokitesvara is seated in the half
lotus position in deep meditation. Her
left hand is held forwards in varada
mudra, and the right hand rests to one
side. She is dressed in a long robe
incised with floral scrolls along its
border - the robe covering her shoulders,
both arms and legs, and collecting in
pleated swirls at the bottom.
The chest has been left exposed, and
is adorned with a beaded necklace. The
Bodhisattva faces forwards with half
closed eyes and a half smile; her hair
is swept back and kept in place by a
simple crown centred by a seated Amitabha
- a thick braid of hair falling onto
each shoulder.
Height: 23" / 58.5 cm |
