| 56 | A TWO
COLOUR CARVED BEIJING GLASS JAR |
Qianlong period
1736-1795 AD
China
The jar is of baluster shape in clear
glass - cased in red, then carved in
cameo - and the short foot is formed
of the overlay glass. The decoration
consists of three scenes; they blend
into each other in an open design loosely
divided by three trees - the spreading
branches of which occupy the upper half
of the jar. In one scene, a scholar
crosses a bridge over a stream mounted
upon a horse and followed by his attendant,
who carries a large flowering prunus
branch.
On the other side of the bridge, a flowering
prunus tree grows behind a large rock;
beyond this, the scholar is again depicted
- walking with a stick towards a willow
tree, and followed by his attendant
carrying his master's accoutrements.
To the right of the tree, a circular
pavilion is placed upon a flat rock
platform where the scholar is seated
alone reading, with a pine tree on the
far side. The shoulder of the vase is
encircled by a row of ruyi heads divided
by plantain leaves below a stylised
slanted key fret. The neck is incised
with a more elaborate fret.
