34 | A PAIR OF CANTON ENAMEL CUPS AND SAUCERS

Qianlong period 1736-1795 AD
China

The saucers are of hexagonal, scalloped form - with a gilt copper rim. Six different flower sprigs and leaves are painted in famille rose enamels to the well of each section, and the raised centre is ringed with single lotus petals and leaves - around a whorl of the same combination, amongst blue scrolls. The reverse is painted a light green turquoise - with a single circular dragon in black enamel, and gilt details to the centre. The cups are of quatrefoil oval form - with gilt copper handles in the form of a bamboo section, flanked by two bamboo leaves in enamel. Their sides are decorated with the same sprigs as the saucers - descending to a raised foot with a gilt copper rim of the same shape. The interior is plain white with a single small sprig at the bottom.

Width of saucers: 4 ¾" / 12 cm
Height of cups: 1 ½" / 3.2 cm
